it's time for another episode of council corner where we highlight some of the topics discussed at this week's council meeting for the first time we have councilwoman Shireen L Williams with us of Ward 7 thank you so much for being with us thank you for having me of course so uh it hasn't really been that long since you've been on the dis but talk to us about the last couple of months um just as being Ward 7's new council member I tell you it's been very exciting I've been very very busy uh I have already had two meetings with my constitues in w 7 as you know w 7 is very very large so I've sectioned out the meetings as far as went to have them I had one January 18th February 22nd I had at the Lash power Gallery which is located at 620 Southwest D Avenue and from 5:30 to 6:30 and there was refreshment served my next meeting will be April 18th same location or same time at the meeting there are City officials they come and they give out pertinent information to the citizens and which I'm very happy about that you know when the citizens are educated about different things here in the city of laon it helps um our city overall and you know also you know the citizens have some questions they just need to know what to do just in case we have stray dogs that's going about uh we may have some squatters and empty houses and you know this different information is you know been given to them and then also the site that they can go to as far as the City Council meetings l.gov so anyone is welcome to go on that site and so they can just see the um the city council's meeting also have a lot of invites to military ceremonies been going to a lot of those cuz as you know Lon Fort said we are uh Unity so it's been I just been very very busy also just going through my neighborhoods looking at the different streets and different things if the potholes need to be filled just send emails and everything about that to the city manager which I give uh accolades to the city streets uh Department which they have been very very good as far as our responding to that but that's some of the things that I've been doing yeah and you mentioned city streets and that's kind of part of the next top one of the discussions at city council was um y'all approved or y'all directed staff to get that contract underway for the uh contractor to start on the next 15 road projects for the On Target on time program we're just milling and overlaying a ton of streets so talk to us about kind of what that means for your ward uh for my ward I know that for 38th Street well Lee Boulevard up to uh 38th Street all the way up to B your road uh what's going to be happening with that particular road which I'm so happy about it which I had when I first got sworn and I asked the city to reconstruct that road do not just do the overlay of payments so all of that old material is going to be torn up and then it's going to be new materials going to be put down and then also it's going to be sidewalks that's added in which that is very very good because I often see some Runners I can tell they're College runners and running up and down that particular Street and you know safety issues and everything like that and this is a lot of uh Flor traffic the sports vehicle so I'm excited about that particular Road and then also uh Sheridan Road we're going to be I've asked for Sheran road to be reconstructed that's from Lee Boulevard all the way up to B road so that road there too will be reconstructed and those are some of the roads which um the citizens had asked me about when I was campaigning I told them I would be sh to relay this information to the city so I'm just so excited about just the different things that's happening and then expeditiously they're happening so fast so just excited about that yeah very exciting and actually that that project that you're talking about from um Bishop to Lee 38 that's not even part of the On Target on time which just kind of goes to show how much work is being done how much investment's being put into uh just bettering the road for C so absolutely needed so another thing that I wanted to talk to you about was it was in the city transit trust meeting whenever the general manager of lats Ryan Landers came and and presented you guys the transit master plan yes what were your thoughts about the direction of lats and and how is that going to impact your ward um I was happy to to to hear what was you know happening with lax and that there's going to be some more added routes which I'm happy about that and I did specifically ask a question right there 67th in Lee and that's as far as it go on my side of w 7 so I did ask if it would be going further down to uh Bishop Road 67th and Bishop Road which that is much needed because we do have some a lot of elderly people over in that area that they're military retired so and someone had questioning me before uh about that uh particular route so I think it's very good what uh LAX is going to implement and it's overall it's going to help all the citizens here in La so sometime if you feel like well I just don't want to drive today I want to ride the bus Which that's something that I would like to do if nothing else just to know the routes and see what's going on right here in the city of log so thumbs up good idea very good now is there anything else that you want to add you want to talk about uh yes I I like to mention about it this is women history uh month so just like to give us a shout out to a few of our women right here in the city of L um you know women has made great strides throughout the history and one particular that I like to mention is the military and I could say cuz I am a retired lieutenant colonel so we have at one point in history the women could not be in the comat zone uh I've had opportunity to go to comeback Zone several times so women has made a a great strides also um um I like to really recognize this one lady U her she's a retired warant officer and a lot of people may know her Mrs Pat Uh Po and she she makes sure she lays those wreaths uh for the retired military that have gone on and passed on she and others does um also we have women that's in the education field so uh Dr Sheryl M she's retired now but she's still working in the community with our children so we appreciate you Dr uh M also uh NAACP president uh Mrs dores Raphael and you know she has done a lot right here in the community and it's you know naac was really pushing as far as for women to have those equality and that's part of the uh theme for this month equality inclusion and that we can be included and one lady is uh Mrs Mary White kovon and she was a great AC activist with NAACP she is ccasian but you know NAACP is a multiculture they it was multiculture started it wasn't just African-Americans that started but there was a mixture of race that started but I want to recognize her because she was very instrumental and women being able to vote so that 19th Amendment Mary white coverton was very instrumental in getting that uh that pass and thank you for all of your contributions that you're doing now that you're going to continue doing in the future councilwoman Williams we appreciate you and uh if if you missed the city council meeting this past time be sure to catch up on our website l.gov or of course we always invite you in person the next council meeting is March 26th at 2: p.m.
here at City Hall until then have a great couple of weeks.
